STEAM GENERATOR CUM COOKING VESSEL
Jharkhand is a large producer of Vegetables and Fruits. Many a time surplus production results in very low price and distress sale. This situation can be avoided by preserving some of these products during high yield season. This requires a village level processing centres. A village level processing centre requires substantial capital investment of which a major part goes for steam kettle and boiler. Most of the time, it is beyond the reach of small producer. As a part of its equipment development programme, SRI has initiated a project for development of a steam generator cum cooking vessel which has potential to overcome the problem of small entrepreneur/ cultivator. The project aims at developing a cost effective, easy to handle mechanised device having low running cost which can be heated with any type of fuel. This was initiated with CORE SUPPORT grant from DST. The Steam generator cum cooking vessel generates steam within itself. This steam heats the jacketed cooking pan which is the main cooking vessel. The maximum capacity of this cooking vessel is 40 kgs. The equipment is designed for processing a batch of 40 kg tomato which can give 15 kg tomato puree in 2 hours. Lab scale trial has been successfully conducted for producing other products such as condensed milk, Jam/jelly, sauce etc. This equipment and the associated technologies are being developed for small producer. It is a low pressure (10 psi), multi-fuel, stand alone equipment which is easy to handle. The conventional equipment used for this type of processing contains a low pressure boiler and a jacketed steam vessel. The cost of this type of equipment of same capacity which is available in the market is about Rs. 1.50 to 2.00 lacs. The estimated cost of the equipment is likely to between Rs, 50,000/- to Rs. 60,000/- which is much cheaper than the existing one.
